Student Centre Recognised at the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards

The University of Sussex Student Centre has been highly commended at the Sussex Heritage Trust 2023 Awards.

Now in their 25^th year, the Sussex Heritage Trust Awards recognise and reward the highest quality conservation, restoration and good design of newly built projects while encouraging the use of traditional skills and craft.

The design narrative of the student centre is rooted in the local context, reflecting the Sussex coastline, the Southdown hills and Brighton itself, all of which helped form a language for the finishes and features. Several key joinery features were designed to sit within the space. These form natural landmarks within the building which aid wayfinding and provide features of interest for the students to engage with.

Nigel Rippon, Head of Capital Projects for the University, said: "It is a real honour for our Student Centre to have been Highly Commended in the Sussex Heritage Awards – our aim was to create a modern flexible space dedicated to Students whilst also complementing our historic campus, so I am delighted to see our achievements recognised."

The centre reflects the University of Sussex’s distinctive brand: confident, progressive, and unafraid to stand out. Form and function go hand in hand, with comfortable furniture, integrated IT systems and efficient layouts complemented by strong, quirky design aesthetics.

The final result is a non-corporate environment for students and staff, which supports their well-being and provides a welcoming and inclusive hub.
