Challenge

The Victoria Building is a significant, Grade II-listed historic building in Blackburn and a very recognisable part of Blackburn College. However the current site is run down and unsuitable for teaching and learning. This new scheme will refurbish the spaces and rationalise the existing plans to bring the layout back to the original, more coherent, open-plan design.

Approach + Solution

We are designing interventions in the building in collaboration with the conservation office and Historic England. These will ensure accessible, open and encouraging spaces for all students. Our plans also include new teaching accommodation which will incorporate arts studios, IT facilities, vocational teaching and social learning spaces.

ADP’s upgrades for the site include the historic fabric being upgraded with extension roof repairs. A new lift within the existing atrium and a new interior design strategy drawing on the Victorian heritage of the building will also be built.

We are undertaking consultations with the college student stakeholders to develop the designs. Our team have spent ‘a day in the life’ of a student to appreciate the ethos, atmosphere and values of the college.
