Challenge

The Core is a new build five storey building, providing two day surgery full GA theatres for the Evelina Children’s Hospital along with a procurement room. The building sits in a constrained site between the Evelina Hospital, the Victorian South Wing and the 1950’s East Wing.

Our brief required linkages to various levels within the site which has been key to the strategic planning of the facility. In addition to its GA theatres, the Core also provides a simulation teaching facility for Kings College University training which includes two operating theatres and simulation wards as well as supporting spaces.

Approach + Solution

The flow for the day surgery element as been key to the function of the building. The Evelina team were keen that the flow did not cross between pre-op and post-op and we developed a single ‘one way’ flow in a loop so patients travel into theatre at one end and out at the other end to recovery, thus there is no cross over, unlike a traditional theatre with exit bay and patients coming out potentially crossing with patients coming into anaesthetic.

The procedure room allows greater throughput for non-GA patients and has allowed greater flexibility in use. The simulation theatres have the same environment as fully functional theatres but include SMOTs cameras for remote viewing and training and assessment and have been designed to allow future usage for operational use if there is a future need.
