Challenge

The Children’s Day Treatment Centre at Evelina London Children’s Hospital is a new state-of-the-art facility inserted into a highly constrained sensitive site between the Victorian St Thomas’ Hospital and the contemporary Evelina London Children’s Hospital – a restriction that shaped the project, inspiring us to explore new innovations in healthcare design.

The role of the Centre is to reduce waiting times for families on the day of surgery, improve patient experience and enable Evelina London to increase capacity to treat more complex patients in the main children’s hospital. Opened in July 2023, the new Centre will treat up to an additional 2,300 children per year – in the first five months alone, clinical teams treated over 900 children and young people.

Approach + Solution

The project followed the completion of a strategic study for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, which identified opportunities for future site developments against the Trust’s vision for the provision of health services.

Families now spend less time waiting on the day of surgery, as pre-surgery checks, the operation, recovery and preparation for going home can all be carried out seamlessly in one place. The admission times are staggered – previously, patients would arrive early in the morning or at lunchtime. Now, families arrive during three-time slots, allowing the clinical team to spend more time with each child.
