Challenge

Mobius Foundation is an NGO committed to spreading sustainable consciousness amongst Indian citizens. Our commission was to design a new research unit in a 34-year-old building. The challenge was to retain the design identity developed through previous projects and to provide a highly flexible, comfortable, and sustainable environment for the researchers.

Approach + Solution

The 2000 sq ft research facility sits within a high quality office tower in the heart of Delhi. Created by joining two existing offices with very different aesthetics, one a high quality fit out the other of poorer quality, we were able  reuse much of the existing material.  Old hardwood partitions were reimagined and reused in a number of ways, including as a central art piece in the form of the “Tree of Knowledge” which doubles up as a collaborative research area. Less precious materials were also reused in the construction of the refurbishment but remain unseen in the final design.

The acid-bright palette of the NGO is picked out in accented walls  and furniture and is set against more natural, neutral tones of timber and marble.
