Three More Awards for Spanish City

Two RTPI Awards and a RICS Award
for this historic development.

Our redevelopment of Spanish City
is winning yet more acclaim across the country, with three more awards under
its belt.

On Wednesday 24^th April,
Spanish City snapped up two RTPI (Royal Town Planning Institute) Awards for
Planning Excellence, winning the “Excellence in Planning for a Successful
Economy” and “Excellence in Planning for Heritage and Culture” categories. Two
days later, the project was announced as the winner of the RICS (Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors) North East Awards for “Tourism &
Leisure”.

Spanish City reopened its doors
to over 16,000 visitors in July 2018, following many years of deterioration.
ADP worked closely with North Tyneside Council, construction company Robertson,
and new operator Kymel to sensitively restore Spanish City, securing the
seaside pleasure building’s future.

The regeneration of the iconic
Grade II listed building is key to North Tyneside Council’s £36m Seafront
Masterplan. Our conservation approach was to retain as much original material
and features as possible. Lost features were reinstated, the stunning rotunda
was returned to its original splendour, and we provided high-quality popular
facilities to sustain the building’s future. New copper-clad extensions are
contemporary, clearly differentiating between old and new.

The RTPI judges described Spanish
City as “a project that had the local community at the heart of it all. Despite
being cherished by the locals this seaside resort had been left behind, but the
council are putting it back on the map despite challenging circumstances. [We]
were particularly impressed by the use of technology in the overall
transformation of the building.”
