The Portico is a local landmark in Hackney, originally built in 1823 as the frontage to a Victorian orphanage. After standing empty for years and appearing on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register, the Grade II listed building was transformed into a new home for Lower Clapton General Practice.

We returned nearly two years after opening to hear first-hand the impact the building has had on patients, staff and the wider community.

We learned that the building’s imposing nature reinforces the message that health is important with the heritage aspects contributing to a calm, welcoming environment. For doctors, the new space helps them to provide an even better level of care and strengthens their connection to the community.

This short film is part of ADP’s LivedIn series – a collection of 60-second stories created for our 60th anniversary, exploring how the places we design help shape people’s every day.
