The Portico has won Best Health and Wellbeing Project at the Architects’ Journal AJ Architecture Awards 2025.

We transformed a Grade II-listed building, once the 1823 London Orphan Asylum, into a modern GP surgery. From standing empty and on the Buildings at Risk Register, it now addresses Hackney’s healthcare needs.
Our sensitive restoration, retrofit, and new two-storey addition, provides patients and staff with inclusive, flexible clinical spaces internally and biodiverse outdoor areas that welcome and connect the community.

‘This is a reminder that the public sector can still achieve good things at a time when it’s increasingly challenging to do so,’ the judges commented, ‘it has created a healing environment – and embraces the local community.’
Congratulations to our London, Healthcare and Heritage teams and the wider project team!
