Challenge

A game-changing commission by the University of Manchester, the Christabel Pankhurst Institute will transform the way researchers work together. Our brief includes refurbishing a Grade II listed building and providing a new four-storey extension.

Located on Oxford Road, a major thoroughfare in Manchester and the heart of the city’s university quarter, the project will place healthcare technology and innovation as the primary focus.

Approach + Solution

Our designs allow University staff to work together with the University of Manchester Medical School and the Manchester Foundation Trust. In addition to this, they will be linked more closely with work done at other universities along with science and research institutes, both in Greater Manchester and beyond.

With the Christabel Pankhurst Institute, we will provide a collaborative hub, creating a focal point for health technology research and innovation. New flexible and adaptable workspaces will also be provided. Our design creates a variety of spaces that encourage collaboration, engagement and wellbeing.

We used passive environmental design principals to make a highly sustainable extension. Our target is a BREEAM “Excellent” rating which we hope to achieve through a minimal use of energy and carbon emissions.
