Challenge

Landscape Hotels Scotland Ltd’s ambition is to create truly sustainable hotel developments. We are currently working with them to deliver a high-quality hotel and leisure facility on a site located in Calderstone on the boundary of Edinburgh. Our brief was to design a scheme that enhances the biodiversity on site as far as possible while maximising the benefits of the woodland setting.

Approach + Solution

The development will provide 38 new eco-suites positioned around a central 102-room hotel hub. The eco-suites are designed to sit sensitively amongst the landscape, nestled into the woodland setting.

The project aims to retain as many trees as possible and to work with the topography to provide level access to the woodland pods spread among the trees. The main hub respects the existing tree line to reduce the visual impact from afar while maximising views out. This central hub accommodates restaurants, conference facilities, gym and spa, as well as rooms above.

The use of locally sourced cross-laminated ‘Scottish’ timber for the structure, will help the local economy as well as the low carbon footprint of the hotel’s construction.  Our sustainability-driven approach also includes the use of MMC (modern methods of construction) and incorporates both PV and Air Source Heat Pumps into the structure to minimise energy reliance of the grid.
