We’re excited to announce that the University of Sussex’s Student Centre has been shortlisted at the FX International Interior Design Awards 2022, under the ‘Public Sector’ category!
The prestigious FX Awards invite both British and international design talent from all over the world to enter the very best of interior products and projects.
Situated at the heart of Brighton’s student residential area, the University of Sussex’s Student Centre is a primary location for students accessing services face-to-face.
The interior design creates a supportive, non-corporate environment for students and staff. An integrated, holistic approach was used to help create a sense of belonging and support neurodiversity, inclusivity and wellbeing. The design was reviewed against these criteria, and applied to the type of spaces created, the quality of finishes, colour palettes chosen, and the various key features designed.
The centre reflects the University of Sussex’s distinctive brand: confident, progressive, and unafraid to stand out. Form and function go hand in hand, with comfortable furniture and efficient layouts complemented by strong, quirky design aesthetics. We made sure to specify finishes with excellent eco-credentials, and key spaces include upcycled and vintage furniture
The design narrative is rooted in the local context, reflecting the Sussex coastline, the Southdown hills and Brighton itself, all of which helped form a language for the finishes and features. Several key joinery features were designed to sit within the space. These form natural landmarks within the building which aid wayfinding and provide features of interest for the students to engage with.
The result is a centre which cares both for the environment and everyone who uses it – making a welcoming, highly inclusive asset for the students and staff of the University of Sussex
Winners will be announced at the FX International Design Awards Ceremony in London on the 30th November.
