Planning secured for Notre Dame
School.
ADP is thrilled to have secured
planning consent for a new building for art at Notre Dame School in Cobham,
Surrey.
The new three-storey infill
building will replace a number of single-storey, poor-quality extensions. It
will house a new art department with a large, open-plan “art school” studio space
on the top floor, a textiles studio and tech room on the first floor, and a new
staff room and Year 11 common room on the ground floor. By linking the existing
teaching buildings on either side at ground level with a new cloister
and also linking them at upper levels, circulation and
accessibility will be improved.
The site sits within the green
belt, and close to the original listed manor house that forms the heart of the
school.
Our design incorporates dark
grey/blue brick with deep reveals and perforated open brick into the new
staircase, providing dappled daylight and natural ventilation. A large, two-storey
bay window on the east elevation will provide views over the school’s gardens
and beyond to the Surrey countryside. Ribbon windows on the north elevation
will provide consistent north light.
Studio director Dianna Fletcher
notes, “This will be a distinctive new building that will lift and improve its
immediate context, while reflecting and blending in with it in terms of the
chosen colour scheme and materials. It will give the building a contemporary,
crisp appearance which is respectful of the wider context, and gives sufficient
impact by providing a new focus to the courtyard, signalling the entrance to
this part of the school.”
The project has been
designed by ADP’s collaborative design team, Corde.
